Rare Internships For Women Offered In Music Recording Studios – Here’s How To Apply

The women of Kirklees, turned to the music industry, have an exciting new opportunity to take their first steps towards the career of their choice.

The Yorkshire Sound Women Network (YSWN) is launching two internship opportunities for young women living in Kirklees who wish to gain hands-on experience working in a recording studio.

The organization, a Huddersfield-based non-profit community benefit company, has partnered with BASSment Studios in Huddersfield and Greenmount Studios in Leeds to offer two paid internships that will give interns a valuable first step into the world of music production.

The internships were created as part of YSWN’s mission to provide better opportunities for women in the music industry, addressing the gender gap, which means currently less than 5 % of studio sound engineers “behind the glass” and only 10% of music technology students nationwide are female.

The organization’s own research revealed a similar situation in Yorkshire, with around seven in ten recording studios surveyed in the region being all-male environments.

Each successful candidate will gain hands-on experience assisting the day-to-day operations of a busy recording studio, observing sound engineers as they record and mix bands, assisting in studio maintenance, and learning to produce soundtracks. Staff.

The selected interns will have a genuine love and enthusiasm for music and the way it is made, and while previous experience with a digital audio workstation (DAW) is welcome, it is not essential.

Instead, applicants should demonstrate that they have a positive attitude and are willing to learn all they can about how the studios work.

To make the opportunities accessible to as many eligible women as possible, each internship lasts 16 days in total, works flexibly between September and December of this year, and comes with a scholarship of £ 2,000 (travel costs included) .

The opportunity is supported by Kirklees Council through the Leeds City area business rate pool.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience working in a music studio – an area where we know job opportunities for women can be too scarce,” says Heidi Johnson, Business Development Manager by YSWN.

“YSWN is excited to be able to partner with BASSment Studios and Greenmount Studios to begin to bridge the gender gap with these paid internship opportunities.”
