COVID-19 made me dive into music production, management – DJ Mewsic

Nigerian deejay, Oluwafemi Ojedokun aka DJ Mewsic, said the hardships he experienced during the COVID-19 induced lockdown and ban on public gatherings prompted him to dive into music production and event management. talents in the entertainment industry.

In an exclusive chat with our correspondent, DJ Mewsic said his DJ business was among many businesses that were hit when the COVID-19-induced ban was in full swing.

Noting that things had taken shape gradually since the ban was lifted, he said the deejay business had yet to see the boom it had before the onset of COVID-19.

DJ Mewsic said, “In Nigeria, the DJ profession has changed a lot due to the pandemic. During the pandemic, deejays were separated from the crowd and the deejaying market was badly affected. It wasn’t booming but little by little we are coming back but we still need to do more to get back on track.

“Before the pandemic, deejays usually released mixtapes; produce songs with musical artists and shoot music videos, and through proper music promotions, people will be able to hear us more and we will have more concerts. But during COVID-19, concerts weren’t coming and everyone had to cut expenses.

“I have exhausted all my savings; I used to work in nightclubs and participate in shows and tours with musical artists like Reminisce, Olamide, among others. But during the pandemic there was no work, and that also affected the artists I was working with. Thus, the quest for survival made me improvise to start learning music production and good music management.

“Now my production capacity is around 70% and I have a work model to manage talent. So the pandemic gave me time to learn other things because there was no of work and it was hard and not easy. But as soon as the ban was lifted, we went back to the streets to continue the work and we get concerts, but it’s still not like what we had before the pandemic.

DJ Mewsic urged Nigerian DJs to operate in harmony to enhance their participation in the entertainment industry.
