YouTube Music app is rolling out to older Wear OS watches this week

After launching on Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch4 smartwatches, the YouTube Music app was still missing from every other Wear OS smartwatch that came before it. You see, since Google Play Music was replaced by YouTube Music, the Wear OS companion app was discontinued along with it, and Wear OS wouldn’t see a proper replacement until recently with Samsung’s new smartwatches running Wear OS. 3, and until now with other watches running Wear OS 2.X.

According to The edge, the YouTube Music companion app is now rolling out to Wear OS 2.X smartwatches. Google confirms at the point of sale that the updated app is rolling out this week to Fossil and Michael Kors Gen 6 smartwatches, and Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, TicWatch E3. More Wear OS 2.X devices will get the app “later this year.”

Like the recently updated Spotify app for Wear OS, YouTube Music will be able to download tracks for offline playback. These tracks are refreshed every time the smartwatch connects to Wi-Fi. The caveat, though, is that this will only be possible if you’re a YouTube Music or YouTube Premium subscriber.

It’s been over a year since Google announced it was ending the Google Play Music Wear OS app. Google would eventually announce a YouTube Music app for Wear OS during Google Virtual I/O this year, when Google announced its unified Wear OS 3 in conjunction with Samsung.
